News Investigators/ The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced that several major thermal power plants on the national grid will experience reduced gas supply due to scheduled maintenance at a key gas facility.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, NISO said the maintenance exercise would take place from Feb. 12 to Feb. 15.
According to the system operator, the shutdown will temporarily cut gas supply to power plants that rely on the affected facility.
“Full gas supply is expected to resume on February 16.
“Power stations expected to be directly impacted include Egbin, Azura, Sapele, and Transcorp power plants, ” it said.
NISO also noted that some plants operated by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) — including Sapele, Olorunsogo, and Omotosho — might experience indirect constraints due to wider gas supply balancing across the network.
The development could affect electricity generation levels during the maintenance period.
” This will result in a temporary reduction in available thermal generation capacity across the national grid.
”This reduction underscores the need for careful system operation to maintain grid stability and reliability,”it said.
The system operator also said that In line with its statutory mandate, NISO would deploy appropriate real-time operational measures to safeguard the integrity and security of the national grid throughout the maintenance window.
It said that any load shedding, if required, would be implemented in a structured, transparent, and equitable manner in close coordination with Distribution Companies (DisCos).
”Priority will be accorded to critical national infrastructure, essential services, and security installations.”
The system operator assured all stakeholders and electricity consumers that every action taken during the period would be strictly guided by established operational procedures, grid security requirements, and reliability standards.
”The National Control Centre will intensify real-time system monitoring and contingency planning, while also ensuring fair load allocation based on available generation capacity.
”NISO appreciates the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders as the gas supplier undertakes this essential maintenance.
”Which is necessary to ensure the long-term safety, reliability, and sustainability of upstream gas infrastructure in support of Nigeria’s power sector,”it said.
