Yusuf Constitutes Panel To Investigate Student’s Death In Kano College

News Investigators/ Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has approved the constitution of an administrative investigative committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of a student of St. Louis College, Kano.

This is contained in a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi  Dawaki-Tofa on Thursday in Kano.

He said that the committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ali  Makoda.

Members of the committee include Aminu Hussain, Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters,  Hamza Dantani, and Abubakar Umar, Executive Secretary of the Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board.

Others are Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, Director-General, Media and Publicity, Ahmed Zubairu, proprietors of private schools, the PTA chairman of St. Louis College, while Hafsat Adhama, Senior Special Assistant on Girl Child Education serves as secretary.

According to Tofa, Mrs Binta Mukhtar, the Under Secretary/REPA, will serve as assistant secretary.

The committee is tasked with conducting an independent investigation into the incident,  establishing a timeline of events, and identifying any lapses in supervision, welfare management, or institutional procedures.

“Its terms of reference include reviewing the events leading to the student’s death; examining medical records and reports; and investigating the social environment within the college.

“The committee is required to also assess allegations of bullying, coercion, or unauthorised disciplinary practices, ” he said.

The panel will also evaluate complaints and reporting mechanisms, review staff compliance with supervision guidelines, and recommend reforms to disciplinary and boarding school management systems.

He added that the committee would further propose measures to strengthen emergency medical response and student safety standards across schools in the state.

Yusuf said his administration was committed to establishing the truth and taking steps to prevent a recurrence.

He directed members to carry out their assignments with fairness, diligence, and professionalism, and to submit their findings and recommendations within the stipulated timeframe.
