News Investigators/ Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the award of N31.49 billion contracts for the provision and installation of solar and modular hybrid solar streetlights across critical locations within the FCT.
Mary Ahmadu, overseeing Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), said Wike gave the approval during the FCT Administration Executive Council’s meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
Mrs Ahmadu said that the council meeting, chaired by the minister, considered and approved several major infrastructure and environmental maintenance proposals presented by the AMMC and affiliated agencies.
According to Mrs Ahmadu, the council’s decision was to enhance urban infrastructure, improve nighttime visibility, and boost security across key corridors of the nation’s capital.
In addition to the solar lighting project, Ahmadu highlighted several other key approvals granted by the council to maintain the aesthetic and environmental standards of the territory:
She said that the council ratified the contracts for the extension of solid waste collection and management services across 40 delineated districts in the FCT, from March 1 to Nov.16, 2025, valued at N5.96 billion.
She added that the council also ratified contracts for the operation and maintenance of the Wupa Basin Sewage Treatment Plant (WBSTP) for a 24-month period, from March 1 to Nov. 16, 2025, at the cost of N2.21 billion.
“Also ratified are the contract awards for routine maintenance and management of facilities across selected FCTA departments and public buildings under the AMMC, amounting to N1.52 billion and N106.16 million, respectively.
“There was also the ratification of the evacuation and routine maintenance of communal waste collection points along the Umar Musa Yar’Adua Way for a two-year period under the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), valued at N488.39 million,” she said.
The overseeing coordinator emphasised that the execution of the contracts will significantly improve public safety, streamline environmental sanitation, and sustain high standards of facility maintenance throughout the metropolis.
