UNSPECIFIED NUMBER OF PEOPLE KILLED AS GUN MEN SACK ABIA COMMUNITY, RAZE HOUSES,

Barely a week after bloodthirsty gunmen stormed a burial ceremony at Ebenebe, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, and mowed down 20 persons, the killings have continued in the South East.

This time, the killers moved to Amangwu Ohafia community, Ohafia Local Government Area of ABIA State where they unleashed an orgy of violence on the community.

The attackers were said to have killed many people and also razed several buildings.

The reason for the attack was not clear as no official statement has been released on it.

A source said that the inhabitants of the troubled community are seeking refuge in nearby communities in fear that the attackers might return.

The attack is coming a day after the Anambra Catholic bishops 40 days prayers and fasting over the alarming spate of insecurity in the state and indeed the South East.

The bishops in a statement on Tuesday, signed by Most Rev. Valerian M. Okeke, the Archbishop of Onitsha and Metropolitan Ecclesiastical Province, on behalf of the Catholic Bishops of Onitsha Province, stated that the South East was in urgent need of spiritual intervention.

“For quite sometime now, the South-eastern jurisdiction which God entrusted to our
pastoral care has become a theatre of ungodly and wanton destruction of life and properties.

“The forces of darkness and death seem to have cast its shadows over the
south-eastern part of our Country. This has not been part of our history or who we are as a people. In the midst of these tragedies, many people are tempted to lose faith in God and hope in man.

“It is against this prevalent despondency, that we, the Archbishop and Bishops of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province send you this message of hope and call for prayers especially this holy season of lent. We are indeed convinced that those who put their trust in the Lord can never be disappointed.” The bishops had said
