News Investigators/ Mohammed Onawo, representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District, has been elected as the governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Nasarawa state, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mr Onawo emerged as candidate during the party’s special delegates congress held on Saturday in Lafia.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that delegates from the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state affirmed the Onawo as the party’s candidate.
NAN also reports that the congress was convened to fill-in the vacancy following the withdrawal of Dr Mohammed Auwal, the former governorship candidate and Chairman of the party in the state.
In a brief acceptance speech shortly after he was declared winner, Onawo thanked party members for the confidence reposed in him.
He pledged to run an issue-based and peaceful campaign, adding that his administration would focus on tackling security, provision of infrastructural development, improved agriculture, quality education and job creation.
“I accept this nomination with humility and a strong commitment to serve the people of Nasarawa State.
“Together with APM, we will build a state where every citizen will have the opportunity to thrive,” he said.
The lawmaker said that he has the needed experience to govern the state, having served in the House of Representatives and now the Senate.
“I’m coming with huge political experience, legislative exposure and a strong grassroots structure, especially in Nasarawa south.
“This is why I remain a credible alternative for the people of Nasarawa state in 2027.
“As a two-term member of the house of representatives, former Speaker of the state House of Assembly and now a senator, I have built alliances across the state and beyond.
“Therefore, I will take Nasarawa state to an enviable height if elected,” he said.
Onawo further promised to run a people-centred and all-inclusive administration if elected.
He, however, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
Earlier, Auwal, the former candidate said that his decision to step down for Onawo was in the interest of party and to support a candidate with wider political reach.
NAN reports that the congress was monitored by INEC officials and the security agencies.
