News Investigators/ The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kaduna State Chapter, has urged Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani to take responsibility for the state’s debt burden and provide solutions to the financial challenges confronting the state.
The PDP made the call in a statement signed by its State Chairman, Edward Masha, on Friday in Kaduna.
The party was reacting to Mr Sani’s recent interview on Channels Television, where he disclosed that the state was paying about N6.7 billion monthly to service inherited loans.
It said the governor should not shift responsibility for the $350 million World Bank loan, which it alleged he actively championed while serving as Senator representing Kaduna Central.
According to the PDP, Mr Sani, who was then Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, played a leading role in securing the approval of the loan in March 2020, after it had earlier been rejected by the eighth Senate.
The party recalled that Mr Sani had expressed confidence in the ability of the administration of former Kaduna State Governorerno, Nasir El-Rufai to prudently utilise the facility.
It further alleged that the three Kaduna senators in the eighth Senate, Shehu Sani, Suleiman Hunkuyi and Danjuma La’ah, had opposed the loan, citing the state’s existing debt burden.
The PDP said the lawmakers had warned that the facility could “erode the economic viability of the state.”
It, however, said Mr Sani had criticised their position at the time, describing it as “goofing irredeemably.”
The party maintained that a leader who actively championed a major financial decision could not completely distance himself from its consequences years later.
It, therefore, urged the governor to provide a clear and transparent strategy for managing the debt while protecting the interests of Kaduna taxpayers.
The PDP also called on the administration to accelerate the implementation of the 2026 budget, alleging that capital expenditure performance was below 20 per cent as of the second quarter.
It further alleged that implementation in the health sector stood at about five per cent, saying residents deserved tangible results from the budget.
The party also challenged the administration to fulfil its reported commitment to provide N100 million worth of projects in each of the state’s 255 wards.
It urged the governor to ensure that the commitment translated into verifiable projects that would directly improve the lives and livelihoods of residents.
The PDP called for an end to what it described as the “blame game”, urging the administration to focus on strengthening internally generated revenue, managing the state’s debt responsibly and reducing pressure on federal allocations.
It also called for measures to ease the economic hardship facing residents, stressing that Kaduna people deserved accountability, transparency and measurable performance.
