OAU LECTURERS DECLARE INDEFINITE STRIKE OVER UNPAID EARNED ALLOWANCES

Lecturers of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have embarked on an indefinite strike over the delay in the payment of Earned Academic Allowances.

The OAU Branch of the Academic Staff Union of Union of University took the decision to commence the industrial action at an emergency congress on Monday in Ife-Ife.

The lecturer pointed out in a communique issued at the end of the meeting that the OAU authorities have not demonstrated seriousness on the payment of earned academic allowances to deserving lecturers.

The communique signed by the OAU Branch Chairman of ASUU, Dr. Adeola Egbedokun, stated that the the union was left with no other option than to embark on a strike after all measures to solve the dispute were rebuffed.

“Congress noted that there was no serious commitment on the part of the University to effect payment of EAA to deserving members.

“Congress also noted that all political and diplomatic means to resolve the imbroglio has failed. Consequently, congress resolved that: Total, Comprehensive and Indefinite Strike should commence immediately. The strike must not be called off without a congress resolution to the effect.

“Payment of EAA must be based on ASUU computation. Anything short of this would be unacceptable.

“The Strike Coordinating Committee be set up to monitor the strike. Based on the above and on the strength of the permission granted by ASUU National President, the Chairman, on behalf of the congress declared the commencement of ASUU (strike.”) The communique read.
