News Investigators/ Nigeria has called for urgent de-escalation of tensions between Yemen’s Houthis and Saudi Arabia, highlighting that continues hostilities in the Red Sea could threaten global maritime security and energy stability.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, made the call on Monday in Abuja while briefing newsmen.
Mr Ebienfa said the situation posed a serious risk to one of the world’s busiest maritime routes and could worsen disruptions to global energy markets.
He said the development came amid other international crises, including the situation around the Strait of Hormuz and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which had affected global inflation, food and energy supplies, and economic growth.
According to him, Nigeria, as a major oil-producing country and responsible member of the international community, believes that any attempt to block the Bab al-Mandab Strait or disrupt shipping activities in the Red Sea would have serious consequences for global oil supply chains.
He expressed concern over attacks on commercial vessels, rising insurance costs, longer shipping routes and increased freight charges, which had contributed to pressure on crude oil prices.
Mr Ebienfa said Nigeria sympathised with Saudi Arabia over attacks on its oil facilities, noting that such incidents threatened energy security and economic stability for both producers and consumers.
He also welcomed the end of hostilities between the United States and Iran following 13 days of attacks that caused widespread destruction.
“Nigeria calls on all parties to urgently de-escalate. We urge the Houthis, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the United States to exercise restraint, prioritise dialogue and use diplomatic channels to resolve outstanding issues,” he said.
Mr Ebienfa said a peaceful resolution was vital to restoring safe navigation in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies and protecting the global economy.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to support efforts aimed at reducing tensions and safeguarding critical maritime infrastructure.
The spokesperson said Nigeria remained committed to the principles of the United Nations Charter, peaceful settlement of disputes and international cooperation, adding that the country would continue to advocate dialogue as a non-aligned nation.
He further warned that instability in the Gulf region could affect thousands of Nigerians working across Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
On renewed xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, Ebienfa condemned the incidents, saying Nigeria had raised the matter at the ECOWAS Summit and would seek further action through the African Union.
