News Investigators/ Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged the judiciary to uphold independence, fairness, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
Mr Sanwo-Olu made the call on Monday at a thanksgiving service marking the start of the 2026/2027 New Legal Year, held at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos.
The governor said the new Legal Year offered an opportunity to renew commitment to values that make justice meaningful.
“Administrations will come and go, judges will be appointed and eventually retire.
“Office holders will change, but the institution of justice must endure and its integrity must remain beyond personalities and political cycles,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu said a thriving society required more than effective policies and physical infrastructure.
He said citizens must be assured that their rights would be protected, disputes fairly resolved and contracts respected.
“For Lagos, with its enormous population, vibrant economy and complex social environment, this assurance is particularly important,” he said.
The governor said the effectiveness of the justice system had far-reaching implications for citizens, businesses, investment and economic activity.
He added that a credible justice system was also essential for sustaining public confidence in government and its institutions.
Sanwo-Olu assured the judiciary that the Lagos State Government would continue supporting efforts to strengthen justice administration.
He said such support would remain within the limits of the state government’s constitutional responsibilities.
The governor urged judges to administer justice without fear or favour, while encouraging lawyers to uphold professional ethics and dignity.
He congratulated the Lagos legal community on the start of the 2026/2027 Legal Year.
Sanwo-Olu also prayed for wisdom, strength and grace for all those entrusted with the administration of justice.
