Four policemen attached to the convoys of the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari; Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola; and his counterpart in Labour and Employment, Senator Christ Ngige, have reportedly died in an accident in Asaba Delta State capital.

The officers were said to have lost their lives on Tuesday evening shortly after the Presidential aide and the ministers had finished the inspection of an ongoing work at the second Niger bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State.

Findings revealed that one of the drivers lost control of his vehicle conveying security operatives and crashed into a deep ditch.

A man who identified himself as John Okorie, told newsmen that the incident happened when the vehicle conveying the policemen tried to negotiate a bend leading to the construction site of the Second Niger Bridge.

Further findings showed that the police vehicle was speeding to meet up with the ministers’ vehicles when it veered off the road and crashed.

It was learnt that the driver of the vehicle conveying the policemen was on top speed but crashed because he could not control the speed

“They crashed into a deep pit. I was at the back of the convoy, driving slowly,” the man stated.

According to him,”With the help of other people, we rescued four of them but they were badly injured. They were shouting as the vehicle fell on them.”

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State command, DSP Bright Edafe, when contacted said he was yet to receive details of the accident.

Edafe said, “I have not received the accident report, I will get back to you.”
