FIVE DEAD, 26 RESCUED IN ANAMBRA COLLAPSED BUILDING

A total of five people have died in a collapsed building under construction near the Ochanja market in Onitsha, Anambra state.

The Network gathered that the building, which was meant to serve as a market on completion, collapsed at about 8pm on Monday with some of the workers still inside the building.

The Governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, visited the scene  on Tuesday to ascertain the level of devastation.

The Governor confirmed the death of five people in the unfortunate incident.

Soludo who described the incident as tragic and unfortunate also said that 26 people had been rescued with rescue operation still ongoing.

The angry Governor said that the collapse building  did not have the approval from any government agency in the state.

He said that other structures erected without government approval would be demolished.

“The contractor at his own cost will come and put down the illegal buildings he erected here,”

“They are all going to come down. My government did not approve of this building. We will redesign this area and build it properly.

“A comprehensive inventory of buildings in Anambra markets and public places will be conducted.

“Markets will undergo integrity tests to identify and remove potentially unsafe structures, and individuals found responsible for illegal construction will face legal consequences.”

Soludo said that his government would take the cost of the treatment 

of those rescued who are undergoing treatment in the hospital.

The Governor also condoled the families of those who lost their lives in the building collapse.
