Father, Two Sons Die In Anambra Building Collapse

A middle aged man who is also  a building contractor identified as Chizoba Aniefuna and his two sons have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a storey building in Anambra State.

The incident occured on Saturday  in Egbu Umuenem, village in Otolo Nnewi, Nnewi North LGA of the State.

Also trapped in the rubbles of the building with a pent house was a relative of the builder.

Eyewitnesses said the trapped victim was later rescued and rushed to St. Felix Hospital, Nnewi.

Officials of the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, (COREN) and the Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North LGA, Engr. Chris Obiora visited the scene.

Manual labourers were seen on rescue mission as the excavator brought to rescue the victims broke down at the site.

The State Chairman of COREN, Engr. Victor Meju told journalists after the dead bodies were brought out from the debris, that poor foundation, poor concrete mixture, poor quality of materials, poor wearing cost capacity, nonconformity to standard, non approval from relevant regulatory authorities led to the avoidable tragedy.

He also declared the seal-off of the collapse site.

He stated that the owner of the building, Mr. Chukwunafu Anamanjo would be invited for questioning to aid investigation.

The Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North LGA, Engr. Obiora urged people to always make use of certified Engineers and other relevant personnel in the building sector.

He said that members of monitoring teams are also important in ensuring that all stick to standard.

The Sectoral Head of COREN in charge of Nnewi and environs, Engr. Arinze Okwuosa, said his team observed a lot of foul play in the course of carrying out their job and called for government intervention to forestall future occurrence
