News Investigators/ The Commissioner of Police (CP), Lagos State Command, Fatai Tijani, has warned that fake news could undermine security, urging residents to verify information before sharing it.
Mr Tijani gave the warning on Thursday at a town hall meeting with personnel of Area N Police Command and stakeholders in Ikorodu.
The meeting had the theme, “Strengthening Community Partnership for a Safer and More Secure Ikorodu”.
The commissioner said misinformation could create fear, cause unnecessary tension and frustrate efforts by security agencies to maintain peace.
He appealed to residents to verify information before sharing it, particularly reports relating to security incidents and activities in their communities.
“Support the police with credible information and promptly report suspicious activities and persons to the police and other relevant security agencies.
“Effective policing requires active participation by residents; the police cannot successfully tackle crime without the cooperation of the communities they serve, ” he said.
The CP stressed that security was a collective responsibility, urging residents, traditional institutions, government agencies and security organisations to work together to address emerging security challenges.
He also urged parents and community leaders to pay closer attention to the activities of young people and guide them away from criminality.
Mr Tijani assured stakeholders that the command remained committed to protecting lives and property, preventing crime and responding promptly to security concerns raised by residents.
‘’Regular engagement with residents will enable the police to better understand their concerns and develop appropriate strategies to address them.
‘’I urge residents to use established channels to communicate security concerns, rather than relying on social media or unverified sources, ‘’ he said.
The police boss said the town hall meeting was part of efforts to deepen police-community relations and foster mutual trust between the police and residents.
Mr Tijani appealed to stakeholders to remain vigilant and support the command with useful information.
According to him, collective action is necessary to build a safer and more secure Lagos.
