Enugu CP Directs Strict Enforcement Of Traffic Laws, Prosecution Of Offenders

News Investigators/ The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Giwa, has directed immediate enforcement of existing traffic laws and regulations as well as detention and prosecution of offenders across the state.

The directive followed the rampant disregard for traffic regulations by motorists, which had resulted in avoidable gridlocks, disruption of traffic flow, road crashes, loss of lives and destruction of property.

This is contained in a statement by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, on Monday in Enugu.

The commissioner said that the directive was in line with the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, order on the nationwide enforcement of traffic laws to restore order on Nigerian roads and safeguard lives and property.

Mr Giwa said that he had mandated the Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of Operations, the command’s legal officer and the state traffic officer to ensure the professional enforcement of the directive.

According to him, this will be done through the arrest and prosecution of offenders in accordance with extant laws and regulations.

He however cautioned officers against any infringement on the rights and dignity of residents while carrying out the enforcement.

The commissioner urged all motorists including police officers and other security personnel to familiarise themselves with and strictly obey traffic laws to avoid arrest and prosecution.

He emphasised that strict compliance with traffic regulations remained essential to reducing congestion, preventing road crashes, and ensuring the free flow of traffic across the state.
