COREN To Host Lagos Regional Engineering Stakeholders Summit

News Investigators/ The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) says it is set to host the Lagos Regional Engineering Stakeholders Summit, on Feb.18.

Prof. Sadiq Abubakar, President of COREN, confirmed this in a statement in Lagos on Saturday.

Abubakar, an engineer, said that the summit was aimed at unveiling and discussing the restructuring, reforms, and new operational framework of COREN.

He said that as the regulatory authority for engineering education, training and practice in Nigeria, COREN remained committed to strengthening professional standards, ensuring compliance and fostering innovation in the sector.

According to him, the forthcoming summit will bring together key stakeholders, policy makers, industry leaders, academia and professionals to deliberate on COREN’s recent legislative and operational reforms.

The COREN president said that the operational reforms were designed to enhance efficiency, compliance, and governance in engineering practice nationwide.

He said that the summit centred on the role of engineering in sustainable infrastructural development and economic growth in Lagos state and Nigeria at large.

He said that Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State would deliver the keynote address.

He added that the governor’s presence would further underscore the government’s commitment to engineering excellence, innovation and professional integrity.

“Additionally, COREN will inaugurate the Lagos Regional Steering Committee (LRSC) during the summit.

“This committee will provide technical and administrative oversight to COREN’s regional and state offices, ensuring  effective implementation of key engineering regulatory activities.

“These includes, Engineering Regulations Monitoring and Enforcement (ERM&E), Engineering Intelligence,Surveillance, and Enforcement (EISE)Task

Force and Engineering Investigations and Compliance Monitoring,”he said.

According to him, the summit will also introduce the expansion of COREN regulatory activities to cover at least 11 engineering sectors, namely, Agro-Allied Engineering, Aviation and Aerospace Engineering.

Other sectors are Oil and Gas Engineering, Construction and Building Engineering, Mining Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Power Engineering, Communication Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Bio-Medical Engineering.

Abubakar said that the restructuring was aimed at improving industry governance, deepening specialisation, and enhancing the overall regulatory framework within the engineering sector.

The COREN president emphasised the importance of the forum in aligning engineering practice with global best standards, fostering collaboration between regulatory bodies and stakeholders and driving national development through engineering innovation.

“This summit presents a unique opportunity for engineers, policymakers and industry leaders to engage in meaningful discussions that will shape the future of engineering practice in Nigeria.

“The reforms we have initiated will not only improve compliance, but also strengthen the regulatory impact of COREN in all engineering sectors.

“COREN looks forward to the active participation of all stakeholders as it continues its mission to regulate and advance engineering excellence in Nigeria”.
