BRICS Mulls Strengthened Global South Negotiation Capacity

News Investigators/  BRICS pledges to strengthen the negotiation capacity of officials and young professionals from the Global South to enhance developing countries’ participation in global governance.

Shri Sudhakar Dalela, Secretary of Economic Relations in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, said this on Saturday while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

Dalela said the initiative was among the proposals presented by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Leaders’ Summit.

He said the programme would support capacity building for officials and young professionals, particularly in new and emerging areas of technology and global governance.

According to him, the initiative is part of India’s broader effort to ensure that BRICS cooperation translated into practical outcomes for developing countries.

“The focus is on practical cooperation and development oriented outcomes,” he said.

Dalela said BRICS leaders had reiterated their support for strengthening multilateralism and making global governance institutions more representative, inclusive, effective and responsive.

He said the leaders also supported comprehensive reform of the UN, including the Security Council, as well as reform of the international financial architecture.

He added that the reforms were expected to provide developing countries and the Global South with a stronger voice in international decision making.

Dalela said India’s BRICS Chairship had involved more than 350 physical and virtual meetings across thematic clusters, ministerial meetings, working groups, business engagements and people centred activities.

He said the chairship had also sought to involve governments, industry, academia, youth, civil society and communities across India.
