News Investigators/ Academic and non-academic unions in state-owned universities in Ondo State have suspended their four-week old strike, directing members to resume duties on Tuesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the affected institutions include Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, and the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMEDO), Ondo.
The suspension was announced in a statement issued on Monday in Akure by the Joint Action Committee of Ondo State-Owned Tertiary Institutions (JAC-ODSTI), signed by its Chairman, Comrade Tayo Ogungbeni, and Secretary, Comrade Kunle Akinwonmi.
According to the statement, the decision follows the intervention of Gov Lucky Aiyedatiwa, which resolves the core issues that led to the industrial action.
“Following the financial intervention of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the crisis that led to an indefinite strike on Sept. 2, 2026, we wish to inform the general public that the indefinite strike is hereby suspended with effect from Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026,” the statement read in parts.
The leadership of JAC-ODSTI commended Aiyedatiwa, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties and Union Matters, Comrade Bola Taiwo, for their efforts in resolving the impasse.
The unions, however, appealed to the managements of the various state-owned universities to urgently address the non-financial aspects of the FGN/Unions Agreement to prevent future industrial friction.
Confirming the development in a telephone interview with NAN on Monday, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), AAUA branch, Prof Boluwaji Oshodi, said that the strike had been called off.
NAN recalls that state-owned tertiary institutions in the state were shut down in early September over non-implementation of the Federal Government-Varsity Unions wage structure (CONUASS), subvention arrears, and staff welfare matters.
