The Academic Staff Union of Universities has rejected the half salaries paid into their accounts by the Federal Government.
The union had also summoned an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council, NEC, following the decision of the Federal Government to pay the lecturers half salaries for the month of October, 2022.
According to the Union, the NEC meeting was sequel to the strange development noticed by its members who received half salaries in their accounts.
It was gathered that most of the lecturers in Abuja were shocked to receive half salaries without mentioning the backlog of salaries of the eight months of the strike.
The half salary sparked off the issue of the meeting as lecturers said they are waiting for the decision of the national body, as most of them expressed anger over the development.
ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, confirmed the development to our correspondent in Abuja adding that, “half salaries were paid, and no reasons were given whatsoever. We learnt that Ngige wrote the office of the Accountant General, and Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system and told them to only pay us for the period when we called off the strike.
“We heard there was a letter to that effect but we haven’t gotten it yet. We are going to summon a meeting.”
According to ASUU, FG paid them palliative for upkeeps, and not salary.
It was gathered that the lecturers got half their supposed pay over their refusal to report for work during the industrial action.
Meanwhile, a letter dated November 2, 2022, and signed by the ASUU Chairperson, Gombe State University branch, Suleman Salihujauro, and Secretary, Mohammed Garba Ndogu, are threatening strike, stating that the Federal Government of Nigeria has refused to release the August and September salaries.
The varsity, therefore agreed “Not to submit the result of the First Semester Examination for the 2021/2022 session.
“Not to continue with the supervision of both undergraduate and postgraduate projects allocated prior to the commencement of the strike action.” The letter stated.
