Army Is Nigeria’s Identity, Defence Minister Declares At 75th WASA

News Investigators/ The Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, on Saturday declared that the Nigerian Army represents the very identity of Nigeria, describing it as a living symbol of the nation’s unity in diversity.

Mr Musa made the declaration at the 75th Army Headquarters Departments and Commands West African Social Activities (WASA), marking the end of the 2025 training year in Abuja.

He was represented at the event by his Special Assistant on Special Duties, retired Maj.-Gen. Henry Wesley.

The minister said the army remained the institution where Nigeria’s ethnic, cultural and religious diversity was most visibly reflected and harmonised.

“The Nigerian Army is a microcosm of the Nigerian state. There is hardly any institution where the cultures and traditions of our people are as widely represented,” he said.

Mr Musa said that the annual WASA celebration was a deliberate platform to recognise and celebrate the shared heritage of personnel, adding that such initiatives had strengthened unity, fostered cohesion and deepened national identity within the ranks.

He extended heartfelt greetings to the troops deployed across various operational theatres, assuring them that their sacrifices were deeply valued and appreciated by the nation.

“Your loyalty, dedication and sacrifices continue to safeguard our sovereignty and protect our democracy,” he said.

The minister reaffirmed the loyalty of the Armed Forces to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Tinubu, and commended his commitment to the welfare of service personnel and their families.

He urged officers and soldiers to remain steadfast, uphold core military values and continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities with professionalism and honour.

In his welcome address, the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Maj.-Gen. William Dangana, described WASA as one of the Nigerian Army’s most enduring traditions, dating back to the Second World War.

Dangana said the event provided an opportunity for officers, soldiers and their families to celebrate the year’s activities in a relaxed atmosphere, strengthen camaraderie and give thanks to God for collective achievements.

He added that the Army Headquarters Departments and Commands recorded a successful 2025 training year, providing operational, administrative and logistical support in line with the directives of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, in spite of the demanding responsibilities.

The colourful event featured traditional dances and cultural displays showcasing Nigeria’s rich heritage, as well as tug of war contests among other displaysl.

It also featured recognition and presentation of awards to some deserving soldiers who distinguished themselves in the discharge of their duties during the year.
