ABU @64: VC Seeks Stronger Alumni Stakeholders’ Support

News Investigators/ Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has appealed for stronger support from its numerous alumni and other stakeholders as the institution celebrates its 64th anniversary.

Auwalu Umar, Director, Public Affairs Directorate of the university, made the appeal in a statement issued in Zaria on Sunday to commemorate the varsity’s anniversary and achievements.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the university was established on Oct. 4, 1962, following recommendations by the Ashby Commission on Post-School Certificate and Higher Education for the creation of a university in Zaria, Northern Nigeria.

The university was named after Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of Northern Nigeria, who served as its first Chancellor and performed its opening ceremony on Oct. 4, 1962.

Mr Umar quoted the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, as saying that since its establishment, the institution had made significant contributions to national, regional and global development in various fields and sectors.

Ahmed expressed appreciation to parents, guardians, alumni and well-wishers for sustaining an enduring bond between the university and the wider society it had served across generations.

He also appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the reforms and strategic interventions across the education sector, noting that many of the reforms had made direct and positive impacts on the varsity and its programmes.

The vice-chancellor thanked the university’s alumni for their support and contributions to the institution in diverse ways over the years and across generations.

He commended the governors of Kaduna, Zamfara and Katsina states for their consistent engagement, steadfast support and commitment to addressing the university’s needs and advancing its development.

He also acknowledged the fatherly guidance of the Emir of Zazzau and support from the Minister of Education, Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, Council, Senate, staff and students of the university.

The V-C said: “While the university is progressing, it looks forward to receiving greater support from its alumni and stakeholders to remain committed to serving Nigeria and humanity with renewed vigour.”
