News Investigators/ Two women, Blessing Okorie and Halima Okorie, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining €6,550 (equivalent to N10.02 million) under the pretext of procuring a Czech Republic visa.
The defendants, Blessing, 68, and Halima, 37, were arraigned before Magistrate Lateef Owolabi on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence and stealing.
The prosecutor, Mrs Josephine Ikhayere, alleged that the defendants conspired and committed the offences sometime in August and September 2023 at Shasha, Lagos.
According to her, the defendants fraudulently obtained €6,550 from Mr Jehu Gad under the pretence of procuring a Czech Republic visa.
She said the defendants knew that the representation they made was false.
She said the defendants failed to procure the visa but converted the money to their personal use.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the five-count charge.
Magistrate Owolabi granted them bail in the sum of N1 million each, with two reliable sureties each in like sum.
The court adjourned the case until Oct. 7 for further proceedings.
