SENATE REJECTS BUHARI’S BILL TO AMMEND ELECTORAL ACT

The Senate has unanimously thrown out President Buhari’s Bill for an Act to Amend the Electoral Act 2022 in its second reading.

The lawmakers anchored their outright rejection of the bill which sought to delete Section 84(12), from the electoral Act 2022 on a court order barring the National Assembly from tampering with the Electoral Act 2022

The President had said that Section 84(12) constitutes a defect which conflicts with constitutional provisions.

A Federal High Court, Abuja, presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo had ruled in an exparte application by the People’s Democratic Party on Monday that the Electoral Act has become a law and can only be amended through due process.

The Senators threw out the bill when Senator Yahaya Abdulahi, led the debate for its  second reading.

They chorused ‘no’to signify their rejection of the ill fated bill when the Senate President Ahmad Lawan called for the votes.
