The Peoples Democratic Party has described the impeachment of the Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Barr Mahdi Gusau, as immoral, illegal and unfortunate.
The party condemned the action of the Zamfara State House of Assembly which impeached the Deputy Governor for “flimsy reasons.”
The Director General, PDP Governors Forum, Mr. CID Maduabum, said in a statement on Friday that Gusau was removed from office for remaining faithful to the PDP in adherence to his oath of office.
Maduabum said that the impeachment of the Deputy Governor is a perfidy and indeed an abuse of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He said that the Zamfara State House of Assembly whose members defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress without any division in the party was an illegal body that cannot impeach a validly elected deputy governor.
“We condemn this naked and unconstitutional abuse of power.
“It is immoral , perfidious and an affront to the rule of law for an illegally constituted House of Assembly to purport to oust a validly elected Deputy Governor, just because he towed the oath of honour and followed his oath of office by remaining faithful to those that elected him as a PDP Member.
“It should be noted that the entire Zamfara House of Assembly decamped from PDP to APC without any form of division in PDP and therefore should lose their seats as required by the Constitution.
“Such an unconstitutional body has no power or mandate to impeach the Zamfara Deputy Governor.”
Maduabum said that the Assembly’s action was further worsened by the fact that there is a subsisting suit on the matter “for which a Court had granted preservative Orders in the past.”
He stressed that the “PDP Governors Forum would support a return to legality and constitutionalism in this unfortunate Zamfara affair.”
