GUNMEN DESTROY IMO POLICE STATION WITH EXPLOSIVES, KILL TWO POLICEMEN…NO THEY KILLED CIVILIANS—POLICE

Some armed gunmen in commando fashion invaded the Umuguma Police Division in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State and bombed the station, killing two Police officers on  the spot.


The gunmen armed with guns and explosives immediately opened fire at the building, housing the station in the wee hours of Saturday and waited outside for escaping officers to run out before opening fire on them.


 The Network gathered that the gunmen was able to carry out their attack by blocking the roads leading in and out of the station, adding that they also block the one close to the LGA council headquarters, before unleashing terror.


An eye witness told our Correspondent, that the residents of the community scampered for safety insde the bush to avoid stray bullets and weapons.
It was gathered that the gunmen shot and killed two police officers. 


The names of the killed officers were given as  Ifeanyi and Iyke. 

Villagers say Ifeanyi was from Umunkwo in Umuguma community and was a final year student of Imo State University in Owerri.


 Ifeanyi was shot while trying to escape through the fence abs the assailants  used a machete and attack him.  He was said to have died immediately on the spot. 

Our Correspondent disclosed that the second victim, Iyke, who hails from was Avu community was shot on the leg as he was trying to run away but that his dead body was later found at a water stand.


The Network learned that the attack was few hours when the Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 9 Umuahia, Isaac Akinmoyede, left the state after a visit.


Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer of Imo State Police Command, Owerri, CSP Michael Abatham, while reacting to the attack by the gunmen denied the report making the rounds that two police officers were killed during  the attack.


The police spokesman rather confirmed that two civilians lost their lives during the attack and not police officers as earlier on reported in the media.
