Flood: N-HYPPADEC Reconstructs Embankment In Niger Community

News Investigators/ The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has begun reconstruction of the collapsed flood control embankment in Muye, Lapai Local Government Area of Niger.

This is to rescue agricultural activities from the annual flood disaster that destroy farmlands and other economic activities.

The Acting Managing Director of the commission, Jimoh Haruna-Gabi, while inaugurating the project, said the reconstruction would cost over N600 million.

He said aside the construction of the embankment, the commission would also reconstruct the access roads and reclaim the land that had been destroyed by flooding.

Mr Haruna-Gabi emphasised that the intention was to enable farmers and fishermen regain footing and return to farming and fishing, which has been their age-long occupation.

He said the affected communities approached N-HYPPADEC through the House of Representatives member for Agaie/Lapai Federal Constituency, Abdullahi Mahmud, seeking intervention for a lasting solution to the problem.

Also, Mr Mahmud said the project would go a long way in restoring the economic fortunes of farmers in the area.

On his part, the Ward Head of Muye, Salihu Muhammad, said the embankment had been constructed four times but had collapsed.

He called on the contractors to work closely with the communities to achieve a lasting solution.
