An outbreak of fire in the early hours of Monday engulfed a two storey building and destroyed property worth several millions of naira in Onitsha Anambra State.

The incident occured at about 4:35am at Akunnia Street, Woliwo, Onitsha, the commercial town of the state.

Residents and neighbours were said to have battled to help occupants of the building to remove their properties.

However, men of the state fire service in Onitsha were quickly alerted and they arrived early enough to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the building.

The State Director of Fire Service, Engr Martin Agbii told journalists that “At about 0435hrs (4.35am) of today (Monday 25-07-2022, Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call of fire outbreak in a two-storey residential building at Akunnia Street, Wolowo, Onitsha.”

He said two fire trucks and team of his men were deployed to the scene in order to bring the situation under control.

According to him, “We deployed two (2) fire trucks and firefighters to the fire scene. The fire was fought, controlled and extinguished with the assistance of the members of the public who were at the scene before our arrival.”

He said, “Although, the fire affected the last floor of the building but a lot were saved within and around the burning building.”

Agbii stated that, the cause of the fire remains unknown and there was no loss of life.”

He explained that the major challenge encountered during the incident was that the fire fire trucks found it difficult to penetrate the street to the burning building due to how the buildings were structured with no space for emergency vehicles.”
