A British-Nigerian Obaro Okagbare has been jailed after being found guilty of raping a woman he had met only hours earlier.

Okagbare, 32 of Holburne Road, SE3 was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years’ imprisonment at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday.

Okagbare had been found guilty of two counts of rape at the conclusion of a trial at the same court on Jan. 23.

He will also be made to sign the Sex Offenders Register for an indefinite period.

The court heard how Okagbare had met the women, aged in her 20s, for the first time on the evening of Jan. 31, 2020 after the pair had exchanged messages on Instagram.

According to a statement issued by the Metropolitan Police, Okagbare and his victim had initially planned to go out but decided to go to Okagbare’s house instead. Once there, the pair drank and smoked cannabis before the woman complained of feeling unwell.

“She went upstairs to the toilet where she was sick and was helped from the toilet to the bedroom by Okagbare where she described she was unable to speak or move. Okagbare then raped her twice while she was incapacitated.

“When the woman regained her ability to function, she left the address and contacted police.

“Okagbare was arrested on Feb. 2, 2020 and was subsequently charged with rape.

“Officers collated forensic and video evidence which would help prove his guilt”, Met stated.

Detective Sergeant Dean Young of the South East Public Protection Team said: “Okagbare cruelly took advantage of this woman’s incapacity and raped her twice when she was in no position to consent.

“The woman he attacked has shown tremendous strength and courage in both reporting her ordeal to police and seeing this process through the courts. I hope Okagbare’s sentencing gives her some closure.

“I also hope this sends a strong message to those who have been a victim of sexual offending – please report this to police as we have specially trained officers who can support you and help put perpetrators behind bars”.
