It was a tragic new year day in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital as suspected arsonists have burnt a member of staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria and his wife to death in the city on Sunday.
The Network gathered that the hoodlums set the residence of the couple at Government Reservation Area (GRA), Ibara in Abeokuta, on fire shortly after they returned from the cross over service.
It was learnt that the husband, identified as Kehinde Fatinoye was a staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria while the wife, Bukola Fatinoye was a staff of the Federal University of Agriculture (FUNNAB), Abeokuta.
The remains of the victims who were burnt beyond recognition were packed by policemen and health officials at the scene, taken away to the hospital in an ambulance.
The suspected murderers were said to have trailed the victims to their residence, set it on fire and kidnapped their son and maid.
The Network gathered that the arsonists later threw the son and the maid into a river along the Adigbe-Obada axis of Abeokuta.
The police have said that while the maid was rescued the son has not been found.
Large number of relatives, church members and sympathizers gathered in the house crying over the grisly incident.
Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof.Olusola Babatunde Kehinde has urged security agencies to ensure that those behind the dastardly act are arrested and prosecuted.
He described the death of Mrs Fatinoye, a senior staff of the University, and her husband as gruesome and a shock to the University community.
The academic spoke during a condolence visit to the residence of the deceased on Sunday.
The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi who confirmed the sad incident to the media said it was a case of assassination.
“When the couple were killed, their remains were equally set ablaze”.
“After the dastard act, the couple’s son and their housemaid were kidnapped and threw them into a river. Though the housemaid has been rescued alive, we are yet to see the son”.
He said that a suspect had been taken into custody while assuring that those behind the callous murder would be arrested and made to face the law.
