Former governor of Anambra State and the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has received the certificate of return of the party following his emergence as its flagbearer.
The certificate of return was handed over to him on Friday.
This is contained in a tweet posted to the party’s Twitter page, @NgLabour
The tweet read, “Mr. Peter Obi receives Labour Party Certificate of Returns as its Presidential Candidate for 2023 presidential elections. Congratulations!!”
New National Star had reported that the the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and National Secretary of LP, Umar Ibrahim, had earlier confirmed that Peter Obi remained the party’s presidential flagbearer and that there was no faction in the party, known to them.
In an earlier tweet, the party announced the arrival of its presidential candidate at its national office, Abuja, for the collection of the certificate of return.
The party tweeted, “Dr. Peter Obi arrives Labour Party National Office Abuja to receive his Presidential Certificate of Returns as Labour Party Presidential Candidate. Stay tuned.”
Obi was a two-term governor of Anambra State from 2006-2014 on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
He was also the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 while Atiku Abubakar was the party’s standard bearer in that year’s poll.
Obi had purchased nomination form for the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the PDP before he defected to the Labour Party in controversial circumstances.
Obi’s journey into the Labour Party had triggered wild supports for him across the country, especially amongst the youth.
