Two Rescued as Fire Razes Onitsha Branch of UBA

An early morning fire on Friday touched the United Bank for Africa,Branch of the Onitsha Main market, adjacent to Ejison plaza, Anambra State.

The fire incident was said to have occurred by 10 am.

It was gathered that two people who were trapped when the fire started were rescued by a police team and others who rushed to the bank.

Not much damage was done to the premises as the building was not touched outside but the Banking hall and some rooms were touched.

There were two versions as to the cause of the incident that paralysed business activities of the bank for the day.

According to a staff of the Bank who pleaded anonymity, “the fire emanated from the generator…

“This made customers to scamper for safety and in the process some of the glass windows and doors got broken”

According to inside sources, the fire might  have been caused by faulty cables connected to the generator.

Two people trapped in the bank were rescued and others that sustained various degrees of injuries were said to have been rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, (DSP) said that, “preliminary information reveals that the fire incident emanated from he generator…

“The fire has been put off and the situation is being monitored. Further details shall be communicated,”

Ikenga said.
