Senator Athan Achonu has won the governorship primaries of the Labour Party in Imo State organized on Saturday in Owerri.
The Imo State gubernatorial election is scheduled to take place on November 11, 2023.
The Abia State Governor-elect, Alex Oti, who was the chairman of the election panel declared Achonu the winner of the primary having polled 134 votes to defeat his closest opponent in the election, Mr Jack Ogunewe who 121 votes.
Otti who noted that the election was credible then returned Athan Achonu as the LP candidate.
Achonu represented the Imo North Senatorial District in 2015 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
However, his election was upturned by the Appeal Court in Owerri, in a petition filed the candidate of the Accord Party who insisted that his party’s logo was not included in the ballot papers used for the 2015 National Assembly election.
Achonu is expected to contest the governorship poll with Senator Hope Uzodimma of the APC, Senator Samuel Anyanwu of the PDP and others.
