Vows Bida FMC Won’t Be Distracted
News Investigators/ The Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, Usman Abubakar, Niger, has vowed not to be distracted by allegations of deterioration against the hospital by a group.
Mr. Abubakar said no campaign of calumny will deter the hospital from rendering efficient services to the public.
The Medical Director who spoke to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bida on Wednesday was reacting to allegations against the management of the hospital by an anonymous group.
The group had, in a petition, a copy of which one made available to NAN alleged some irregularities in the running of the federal government-owned facility.
”I am aware of an anonymous entity expressing concerns about my performance as a Medical Director.
“I understand that as a public figure, I am subject to scrutiny and criticism.
“As medical director, I take all concerns about our hospital seriously and will, therefore, address the issues in the petition.
“I would like to clarify the allegations made as incorrect and misunderstanding.”
The medical director said although he would not join issues with any person or group of persons, he would set the records straight.
Mr. Abubakar debunked the allegations of mass exodus of Consultant Doctors from the hospital.
He said the hospital has no fewer than 60 consultants, as against the 39 Consultants in 2021 when he assumed duty.
According to him, the consultants are offering services in the hospital in various specialities and sub-specialities.
The medical director further said that no fewer than seven other consultants applications were awaiting consideration for recruitment in 2025.
Mr. Abubakar said there had been an increase in the number of professional cadres, notably nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists and laboratory scientists, among others.
“It is important to note that the petitioners’ claim that key medical equipment in the hospital were neglected and allowed to deteriorate is far from the truth.
“The hospital has six functional dialysis machines, with one new, one to be installed.
“Plan is underway to procure a new CT Scan machines in the 2024 appropriation, with a five-year maintenance contract.
“The petitioners’ claim of non-functional oxygen plants in the hospital is incorrect,” he said.
The MD also said that an oxygen plant was donated by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and was installed on December 9, 2021.
According to him, since the installation of the first plant, the hospital has not procured oxygen from any vendor .
Also, the hospital has grown to become the major supplier of oxygen for the entire state, through the second oxygen plant, located in Minna.
According to him, from there, IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna, Jummai Babangida Memorial and Neo-Natal Hospital, Minna and other private hospitals in the state are now steadily sourcing oxygen.
“There is no evidence to support the allegation of decline in service delivery in our hospital.
“Efficient and affordable services are being rendered in the hospital. The challenge is that of inadequate bed space.
“However, I will always humbly welcome open and constructive dialogue if there are legitimate concerns or issues to be addressed.
“My door is always open to discuss ways to improve our services and better serve our community,” he said.
Mr. Abubakar also reiterated commitment to upholding the highest standards of medical excellence and leadership.
“I appreciate the support of all staff of the hospital and the community and look forward to continuing to provide exceptional care to our patients,” he said. (NAN
