HEAVY SHOOTING BY RIVAL POLITICAL THUGS IN NNEWI TOWN

Despite the opposition he encountered from the Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, the Labour Party (LP), presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi on Monday, won in his own Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Obi defeated Soludo, in his own Aguata local government area and Arthur Eze in Dunukofia Local Government Area government of Anambra’ State.
According to the results released by INEC, Obi’s LP polled 33, 695 votes to beat Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s APC which scored 178, APGA 468, PDP 584, NNPP 151, YPP 78 and ZLP 148 votes in the area
The Electoral Officer in charge of the Local Government Area, Prof. Sistine PD of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, said then total number of registered voters were 113297, and accredited voters were 36040, valid votes were 35472, invalid votes 535 while total valid votes cast was 36007.
In Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Aguata Local Government Area, Obi polled 37,478 votes while Soludo’s APGA scored 712 votes, APC 301 votes, PDP 522, YPP 198 votes and ZLP 146 votes.
He also beats chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Arthur Eze, in his known Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Governor Soludo and Chief Arthur Eze, ahead of the Saturday’s election proved themselves as Obi’s major obstacles.
The two critics of Obi were against Mr. Peter Obi’s ambition to contest for the presidency of the federal republic of Nigeria under the platform of the Labour Party.
According to them, Obi would not make positive impact in the country adding that it was not yet the turn of the South East for the presidency.
The Presidential election results from the 21 local government areas, so far released in the state, showed that Labour Party scored 18, 715 votes in Dunukofia LGA which Chief Arthur Eze’s political stronghold, his party the PDP polled 438 votes, Young Progressive Party (YPP) scored 56 votes, APGA polled 290 votes, APC scored 222 votes, NNPP 52 votes, ZLP 65 votes, among other parties.
The announcement of the Presidential poll results was disrupted at the headquarters of the INE in Awka, the state capital.
The INEC Collation Officer of the election in Nnewi South, Professor Chinwe Isikpo, from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, after presentation of details of results in the area, raised the alarm that her life was being threatened by unknown men.
Isikpo was hurriedly whisked away and moved to an inner office of the INEC headquarters in the capital town.
“I want to tell the public that my life is being threatened by some people. They have been calling me with different numbers and some of them are in here (INEC Collation Centre for the 2023 Presidential election). They have been following me up and down.” Prof. Isikpo, stated.
According to her, the Electoral Officer (EO) in charge of Nnewi South were behind her travail during and after the polls.
Following the tension, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Dr. Elizabeth Agwu, called for an hour break before the proceedings could continue again.
Meanwhile, there was heavy shootings in parts of Nnewi town which lasted for hours, following the activities of hired political thugs loyal to two rival candidates for the National Assembly elections in the commercial town.
Many persons were said to have sustained gunshot wounds during the attack while police were said to have made arrests uring the incident.
But the Police Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, said the command was not aware of the incident.
