The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in a statement issued on Dec. 5 by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Chiedozie Ogbonnia, resolved that Rivers State would produce the next President General in line with its constitutional provision for rotating the office among member states.
To actualise this, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of Ohanaeze has mandated the Secretary General to convene a meeting of Ime Obi, the group’s highest decision-making body, to establish an electoral committee for conducting the election next month.
This resolution dispels speculation and tension in some quarters suggesting that the Ohanaeze leadership intended to disrupt the constitutional zoning arrangement.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the vacancy for the position of the President-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide followed the death of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu on July 25, 2024 after a brief illness. He was aged 82.
