A crack team of investigators of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission are grilling the former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, for alleged diversion of N42 billion Anambra State Government funds.
A top source at the commission said that the funds involved N37 billion Security Vote and N5 billion Sure- P funds.
The EFCC is suspicious that the N42 billion was withdrawn cash by the embattled former governor.
The source said that Obiano pulled out the funds to fund elections in the state.
Obiano was moved the Lagos office to Abuja to commence full investigation into the allegations against him on Friday morning.
The source said, “He is still with us. He is cooperating with the investigation. A team of investigators expectedly had the first session with him today.
“Willie Obiano was arrested for allegedly misappropriating public funds, while serving as Governor of Anambra State.
The funds include N5bn Sure-P and N37billion Security Vote which was withdrawn in cash.
“Part of the funds were also allegedly diverted to finance political activities in the state.” The source said
The former Governor was arrested by the EFCC his way to Houston Texas, United State at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.
Obiano handed over to Governor Charles Soludo on Thursday signifying his lost of immunity.
The Governor who had been under EFCC watch list was picked up at 8:30 pm by Operatives monitoring his movement as he made to board the flight to the US.
The Head of Media of the EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, could not be reached for comments as the calls placed to his mobile telephone indicated it was outside of network coverage.
The EFCC had written the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service in November 2021 to place the then Governor under watch.
The EFCC requested the NIS to release prompt information on him anytime he attempts to travel out of the country.
A source said that the agency has been conducting discreet investigation on the activities of the former Governor for some time now.
