The St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Owo local government of Ondo state, is set to re-open for worshippers on Easter Sunday following last year’s terror attack.

The church was attacked on June 5, 2022, by unknown gunmen, leading to the death of 41 persons, while 69 others sustained varying degrees of injury.

The suspects arrested in connection with the attack by the military were found to be from the Ebira tribe, which is known for migrant farming.

The Bishop of the Ondo Diocese, Rev Bishop Jude Arogundade, disclosed the reopening of the church during this year’s Chrism mass, as part of the activities to mark Easter celebration.

According to him, the church has been closed since the attack on worshippers.

He also revealed that the government of Ondo State is planning to commemorate the one year anniversary of the massacre in honor of the fallen heroes.

The announcement of the reopening of the church has brought a sense of relief to the Catholic community, who have been unable to worship in the church for almost a year.

Many members of the church have expressed their gratitude to the bishop for the decision to re-open the church and for the support they received from the church during the difficult time.

The attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo is one of several violent attacks on places of worship in Nigeria.

Many churches have been targeted by terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements in recent years, leading to the loss of lives and properties.

The reopening of the church on Easter Sunday is seen as a symbol of hope and resilience for the Catholic community in Owo and across Nigeria.
