Tribunal Strikes Out Suit Against DStv, GOtv Subscription Price Hike

A three-member panel of the Competition and Consumer Protection (CCP) tribunal in Abuja, on Tuesday, struck out a suit challenging the price increase by MultiChoice Nigeria Limited.

Legal Practitioner, Festus Onifade, had earlier dragged the firm on behalf of himself and the coalition of Nigerian consumers to court praying the court to stop the company from hiking subscription fees for its services and other products on April 1, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice dated and filed on March 29.

Onifade sued MultiChoice Nigeria Limited as the first defendant, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) as the second respondent.

But ruling on the matter, the tribunal dismissed the suit on the grounds that it lacked merit.

However, while the case was in the Court, the company hiked the price.

Multichoice runs the satellite television services, DStv and GOtv which have the highest subscription-based platforms in Nigeria.
