Third Party Insurance Claims: Motorists Want Police, NAICOM To Enforce Payment

News Investigators/ Motorists have called on  NAICOM) to extend the same measure of enforcement collaborations and seriousness on third-party motor insurance implementation to the settlement of claims by insurance companies.

Some of them who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, said that extending the enforcement on settlement of claims by insurance companies would encourage people to embrace insurance.

They appealed to the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) to extend the same collaboration with the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in trying to compel insurance companies to settle claims.

Mr Victor Ukong, an Abuja-based motorist, said that NAICOM as a matter of urgency should devise new strategies to compel insurance companies to pay claims, especially that of the third party motor insurance.

Ukong said the Commission must not allow the development to become business as usual where insurance companies mistreated their customers.

”NAICOM must brace up the trail, they should not allow this to be business as usual.

”They should penalise any insurance company that refuses to pay claims of this third party motor insurance and they should also involve the Police in doing this,” he said.

Mrs Lydia Abe, another motorist and a Civil Servant, said that inadequate settlement of claims by insurance companies was a major drawback for her buying into insurance.

Abe called for NAICOM to tighten its regulatory tools to ensure that all insurance companies settle claims that would emanate from the third party motor insurance implementation.

This, according to her, will boost trust and encourage more people to patronise insurance.

Ms Glory Eke, a motorist and a business owner, appealed to both NAICOM and insurance companies to boost sensitisation on third party motor insurance policy for better understanding and patronage.

Mr Olusegun Omosehin, the Commissioner for Insurance, NAICOM, had urged Nigerians to recognise the benefits of third-party insurance.

Omosehin said that NAICOM remained committed in ensuring that claims were duly paid.

“We want to appeal to Nigerians to be very positive about the benefits and be rest assured that NAICOM is here to enforce claims payment.

”As the Commissioner for Insurance, I am giving my word that the insurance sector is up and doing and will be ready to meet all expectations,” he said.

He said that a dedicated complaints desk had been set up to handle grievances in insurance claims and address complaints from motorists.

NAN reports that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, had directed the police to enforce the compulsory Third Party Insurance which began on Feb. 1.
