Subsidy removal: Presidential Committee on Palliative, Organized Labour Meet in Aso Rock

0

The Presidential Steering Committee on Palliatives is holding a crucial meeting at the Presidential Villa.

The committee comprised the two labour Centres in the country,  the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and government representatives.

The meeting is a deliberate step to prevent the organized labour from carrying out its threat to go on strike on Wednesday over the hardship foisted on Nigerians by the removal of the fuel subsidy.

The organised labour had staged a walk out of the last meeting on Friday insisting that the Government was not serious about the ongoing talks on how to cushion the harsh effect of the subsidy on workers and the poor.

The aborted meeting was to be briefed by three subcommittees which the government had proposed to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal – mass transit, the CNG and cash transfer.

Attending the meeting are President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, the President of the TUC counterpart, Festus Osifo, the General Secretary of NLC, Emma Ugbaja, the TUC Secretary, Nuhu Toro.

The labour delegation also include Prof. Sam Amadi.

On the side of the Government are the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Kachollom Daju, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, (NNPCL), Mele Kyari and the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen among others.
