News Investigators/ The Nigerian Press Council (NPC) says it remains committed to the continuous training of journalists across the country to promote responsible practice.
The Executive Secretary, Dili Ezughah, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.
Mr Ezughah noted that it was part of the NPC’s statutory duty to train journalists, adding that, it was what the council was set up to do.
“Journalism is not free speech; attached to it is responsibility. So we will always teach the practitioners the ethics of the profession, and the control and skills they need as Journalists, ” he said.
The executive secretary said that the recent training the council had for journalists from the North Central Region and student of Bingham University was done at the school in Karu.
He said that the students of the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the school were trained.
“As future journalists, they need to begin to imbibe the ethics, and know that journalism is not free speech.
“Also, for the practicing journalists in the North Central Region, it is to refresh what they already know, because, you have to keep training and retraining to meet up with current challenges or trends.
“This is because the environment in which journalism was practised years ago, is not the same today; there are new things now like technology and digital age,” Ezughah said.
He further explained that in the past, practitioners were not confronted with the challenges of the present age.
“Therefore, some of the old schools of thought that are still in practice today need training and workshop; it is like a retool, and that is what we will continue to do to deliver on our mandate, ” he said.
NAN reports that the NPC on May 28 trained no fewer that 45 Journalists from the North Central Region of the country.
It also trained more than 30 students of Communication and Media Studies from Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State.
