Operatives of the Cross River State Police have rescued eight out of nine abducted passengers on Ogoja-Ikom highway on Tuesday.
The Spokesperson of the Command, Irene Ugbo, a Superintendent of Police made the disclosure in Calabar, the Cross River State capital on Wednesday.
The Police Spokesperson said that the ninth person had already escaped from the kidnappers before the rescue operation that resulted in the release of the eight.
Ugbo dismissed the claim in a viral video, that the passengers were abducted by herdsmen.
She said that what happened was a case of armed robbery.
“She said, “Eight of the victims are now in safe hands while the ninth person escaped.
“Reports that the kidnap was carried out by herdsmen are untrue; it was purely an armed robbery incident,” she stated.
The Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Sule Balarabe, had earlier said that operatives of the anti- kidnap unit had been deployed to the area.
He could not give the exact of those involved in the kidnap incident.
