NYSC D-G Tasks Employers On Corps Members’ Safety, Welfare

News Investigators/ The Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Kunle Nafiu, has urged employers to promote the welfare and safety of corps members posted to their organisations.

Brig.-Gen Nafiu made the call in a keynote address delivered at the 2025 NYSC/Corps Employers’ Workshop in Uyo on Thursday.

Represented by Mr Ede Ezekiel, the Assistant Director, South-South, the D-G told corps employers to give priority attention to accommodation, transportation and healthcare of corps members.

Speaking at the workshop with the theme: “Strengthening NYSC-Corps Employers’ Partnership for Improved Mutual Benefit”, further urged employers to treat corps members as bonafide members of their organisations.

“The NYSC/Corps Employers’ Workshop is an annual event that brings NYSC and corps employers to a strategic meeting for exchange of ideas aimed at enhancing cooperations,” he said.

The NYSC chief said that states and local governments should build transit and permanent lodges to accommodate corps members.

“We are supposed to be partners progress, but it is worrisome that some stakeholders are not showing commitment in these critical areas.

“Establishments that require the services of corps members must commit themselves to these obligations,” he said.

Brig.-Gen. Nafiu stated that establishments seeking the services of corps members should make adequate arrangements to take care of their safety and welfare needs.

“Accommodation for corps members and places of primary assignments should not be in locations where lives and property are not safe,” he said.Effiong Essien, the Head of Service, Akwa Ibom, commended the NYSC scheme for making tremendous impacts on the lives of many Nigerians.

Mr Essien stated that the Akwa Ibom Government had shown enormous commitment to the welfare of corps members posted to the state.

He said that Gov. Umo Eno had approved the reconstruction of the NYSC permanent orientation camp to promote corps members’ safety and welfare.

Mr Essien urged corps employers to complement the efforts of the scheme and the state government to enhance the welfare of corps members.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem John, said that corps employers and NYSC management required stronger synergy for the effective functioning of the scheme.

“This synergy should be a shared commitment for national development, human capital growth and social integration. It should be a strengthened relationship for mentorship,” he said.

In his remarks, the NYSC Coordinator in Akwa Ibom, Sam Pepple, thanked corps employers in the state for their care and kind gestures towards corps members in their establishments.

Mr Pepple urged corps employers in the state to remain committed towards  initiatives that would promote the growth and safety of corps members.
