NMC Seeks FG Support To Acquire Math Software For Students

News Investigators/ The Director and Chief Executive of the National Mathematical Centre (NMC), Promise Mebine, has called on the Federal Government to support the acquisition of mathematical software.

He emphasised that the tools would help students solve math problems more efficiently.

Prof. Mebine made the appeal during the closing ceremony of the Sage Maths Software Training on Thursday in Abuja, emphasising that strengthening mathematics education would significantly advance the country.

He explained that the training aimed to foster collaboration and networking among Nigerian mathematicians, particularly in the field of Abstract Algebra, while providing practical GitHub training and experience with collaborative projects.

He stated, “The training will enhance problem-solving skills through applications of Sage Maths in algebra, calculus, number theory, and statistics, and expose participants to contributing to the open-source Sage Maths platform.”

He added that it also offered mentorship and guidance for future research endeavors, helping deepen participants’ understanding of SageMath’s interface, syntax, and basic computations.

According to Prof. Mebine, Sage Maths is a software tool that integrates various existing software programmes commonly used in daily data analysis and requires regular updates.

He urged all participants to take mathematics seriously and to apply the knowledge gained from the workshop towards the country’s development.

On behalf of the participants, Dr Ignatius Ako, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), thanked the centre for organising the impactful workshop.

He pledged to use the knowledge acquired to advance mathematics in Nigeria.
