News Investigators/ The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Benue has arrested 325 drug suspects at different locations in the state in 12 months.
The State Commander of NDLEA, Mrs Esther Musa, made the disclosure at a press conference on Wednesday in Makurdi as part of activities to commemorate the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Mrs Musa said that the arrests were made between June 2024 and June 2025.
The commander said that out of the total number of arrests made, 288 were male, while 37 were female.
She further disclosed that a total of 1,902.2573 kilogrammes (kg) of different kinds of drugs were seized within the period.
Mrs Musa listed drugs to include 1,682.169kg of Cannabis Sativa alongside 55,041.3kg of tramadol, 156.1033kg of cocaine syrup and 0.027kg of amphetamine, amongst other drugs.
She displayed the seized substances, including codeine-based syrup, allegedly among others, in high use in Benue, noting, however, that the agency, through its robust initiative of war against drug abuse, would continue to clamp down on offenders.
Mrs Musa further said that a total of 28 convictions for suspects were secured within the period under review.
“We obtained 36 filed charges and 205 clients counselled in the agency’s facility in addition to 35 already rehabilitated and discharged.
“A total number of 387 urine drug tests were carried out to assess the level of involvement of drug use by some of the suspects.
“The usage of substances has really contributed a great deal to insecurity, which has ravaged the state.
“All hands must be on deck to fight this trend that is on the rise in the state.
The commander stated that the number of arrests made this year was more compared to the previous year, making it a win for the agency.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the command has planned a walk for Thursday to sensitise the Benue public on the dangers of drug abuse.
