The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has commenced an operation against those hoarding the Naira for the purpose of the 2023 general elections.
Operatives carried out separate raids on bureau de change operational points in Wuse Zone 4 and in Kano.
A source who confided in the Network said that the raids were coordinated also to check the alarming free fall of the Naira against Dollar.
The EFCC operatives stormed the Wuse Zone 4 operational base of the BDCs in two white buses.
The current misfortunes of the Naira in value are attributed to illegal practices by unscrupulous elements who buy the Dollar in large quantity and stash it away for the purposes of next year election.
The announcement by the Governor of CBN, Gov Godwin Emefiele, to redesign and reissue some denominations of the Naira By December 31, 2022 is believed to have triggered desperate responses that have further resulted in the depreciation of the value of the Naira.
By the close of trading, a bewildered Nigerian citizenry watched helplessly as the Naira breaks its records low by selling at N840 to the Dollar.
The EFCC source said that while the operations would not be limited to Kano and Abuja, the commission would rely on intelligence to move against those who stash away illicit funds and are desperate to pump them into the system to best the December 31, deadline.
The EFCC had carried out a similar operation in July in response to allegations that some BDC operators were stashing foreign currencies.
The move resulted in a seeking stabilization and temporary appreciation of the value of the Naira before it continued again in disturbing fall.
Investigation revealed that the EFCC is focusing attention of Governors, their allies, high profile politicians and top bank managers who might be colluding with unscrupulous characters to launder monies.
