MAY 16 ULTIMATUM: BUHARI’S MINISTER OF STATE FOR EDUCATION RESIGNS

The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, had resigned his appointment to pursue his ambition to take over leadership of the country.

The Special Assistant to the former Minister of Education said that Nwajuiba resigned to pursue his Presidential ambition in a statement on Wednesday.

He said that Nwajiuba who hails from Imo State wrote the President on April 28 to inform him of his move to resign when he accepted the expression of interest and Nomination form procured for him a group of supporters under the aegis of Project Nigeria on April 27.

Odilli said, “The Honourable Minister, on accepting the nomination form on the 27th of April bought for him by his supporters led by an umbrella group, Project Nigeria wrote the President on the 28th informing him that having accepted the nomination by his supporters to contest the office of the Presidency on the party’s platform, that he would like to disengage from office to enable him to concentrate on his campaign and to avoid any conflict of interest.

He said that the President accepted his letter of resignation without delay.

“I can tell you Mr. President immediately accepted his letter of resignation.”

Odili also said : “Going by the requirements set by the party, so far it will appear on the surface that it is only Mr. Nwajiuba that is the only Buhari appointee to have met that requirement set by the party. It remains to be seen how the party’s screening committee will handle the issue.”

Nwajuiba’s resignation followed a few hours after President Buhari gave a deadline of May 16, 2023 to ministers with political ambitions to resign their appointments.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, drop the shocker while briefing State House Correspondents at the end of Federal Executive Council, presided over by President Buhari.

The ministers affected by the order are Ministers of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio; Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; Science, Technology and Innovation, Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba; Justice and Attorney General, Abubakar Malami, the Governor of Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, who have joined the presidential race on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Others are the Minister of State Mines and Steel, Uche Ogar, who is running for governorship position in Cross Rivers State, the Minister of Women Affairs, Paulline Tallen, who declared her ambition to contest for the senatorial seat in Plateau State.

So far, while the nation expects the resignation letters yo be rendered in their numbers, Nwajiuba is the only minister who has responded to the President’s directive.
