•••159 NIGERIANS RENOUNCE CITIZENSHIP IN 2022
The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola on Thursday, said the massive exodus of Nigerians out of the country in search of greener pastures, popularly known as “JAPA’ SYNDROME” is causing the high demands for Nigerian passports.
Rauf Aregbesola disclosed this at the 64th session of the State House Ministerial briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team, at the Aso Rock Villa.
Aregbesola, said in 2022 alone, the Nigerian Immigration Service, issued out 1,899,683, the highest number of passport booklets in over seven years.
He said: “It has a huge impact there is a heavy demand on passport issuance. And if you look at the trend it is more in the south than in the north and we are responding to it.
“I have told you that we issued 1,899,683 Passport last year. And that’s a clear indication of the fact that there’s a heavy demand on passports issuance.”
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Shuaib Belgore, revealed that at least 159 Nigerians renounced their citizenships in 2022, alone.
According to him, the 150 Nigerians renounced their citizenships between 2006 to 2021.
