June 12: Gov. Abiodun Calls For Renewed Commitment To Democratic Values

News Investigators/ Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has called on Nigerians to renew their commitment to democratic values and ideals.

The Governor made this call during his address at the Democracy Day celebration held on Thursday in Abeokuta.

He was represented by his Deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele.

The event, organised by the Ogun Government, had as theme “June 12: Electoral Reforms and Democratic Consolidation — Enhancing Voters’ Confidence Through Technology.”

Mr Abiodun emphasised the crucial role of youth in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future, urging them to actively engage in civic dialogue and hold leaders accountable, not through cynicism, but through informed and constructive action.

“The significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s democratic journey cannot be overstated,” he said.

“It represents both the fierce struggle and the meaningful progress Nigerians have made towards a more inclusive and participatory political order.”

He further said, “Today, we honour not just the memory of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, GCFR, the pride of Ogun and a martyr of democracy, but also the courage of all who stood with him in the pursuit of a democratic Nigeria.”

He acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to uphold democratic ideals through his “Renewed Hope Agenda,” noting that the 2025 theme reflected the evolving nature of democracy in Nigeria.

The governor reiterated the government’s commitment to good governance, the rule of law, and inclusive development.

He stressed the importance of reinforcing democratic institutions by building trust and ensuring transparency in electoral processes.

Delivering the keynote lecture, former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Oyo State, Mr Mutalubi Adebayo, described the annulled June 12, 1993 election as Nigeria’s freest and fairest.

He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance credibility by adopting more advanced technologies in electoral processes.

Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tokunbo Talabi, described the late Chief Abiola as a national hero and true patriot.

He also expressed appreciation to the people of Ogun for their continued support of the June 12 annual celebration.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of gifts to students who excelled in the state-wide school-to-school debate held in commemoration of Democracy Day.
