IGP Egbetokun Resigns

News Investigators/ The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has resigned from office.

Mr Egbetokun, whose tenure was extended by one year in 2025 by President Bola Tinubu, tendered his resignation letter on Tuesday, citing personal family reasons.

Presidential spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development upon enquiries from journalists.

“A statement will be issued later in the day to this effect,” he said.

“Mr Egbetokun resigned today. He was not sacked, ” Onanuga said.

Mr Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023.

His appointment was confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on Oct. 31, 2023.

Appointed at the age of 58, he was due for retirement on Sept. 4, 2024, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60.

However, the National Assembly amended the Police Act, allowing him to serve his full four-year term unless removed by the President.

Mr Egbetokun’s replacement is expected to be announced by the presidency later on Tuesday.
