Dr Okonjo-Okojo-Iweala advises governors against debt accumulation

By Kamsi Anayo

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of World Trade Organisation (WTO), on Monday advised state governors against accumulating debts for their states.

Okonjo-Iweala gave the advice while speaking at the induction training for re-elected and newly elected governors in Abuja.

The induction training, with the theme: “Governing for Impact (Building Sub-national Governance)”, was organised by the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF).

She advised them to keep an eye on their debt profiles and carefully control their expenditure.

“We used to publish this information during my time as finance minister under President Obasanjo and Jonathan’s administrations.

“You must resume this practice so your citizens can have information on your account.

“Your Excellencies, please watch your debt profiles and keep careful control of expenditure.

“Even as we invest in infrastructure, education and basic healthcare, please endeavour to pay.
